Danni wiped the small puddle of sweat gathering on her forehead. It was only the beginning of spring and already the sun seemed almost too much to bear. Spring was a good time though, when you caught a nice breeze...plus the horse racing industry would be starting back up, which means more injuries, and more thoroughbreds to buy and train. Thinking of that reminded her that she had to sell Scar soon, his training was almost complete. She frowned a bit upon this as she had grown quite accostumed to the sweet nature of the big boy, she enjoyed his company and his ride was always good. Danni tore open one of her woodchip bags and scatterred it around Shania's stall. The mare was dancing n the crossties outside. Stand up. Danni grunted below her breath. She didn't have much of a connection with this new mare. She didn't hate her, she just wasn't her favorite.
She lead the mare back into the box stall. She had all three of the horses to work today and since it was still early, she figured she would start with Demon. She wanted to work Scar last, when more people gathered, hoping he would catch somebody's eye. Danni slid open Demon's door. The striped thoroughbred stallion glanced anxiously at her and then launched at her shoulder, teeth bared and lips curled. Danni ducked quickly and laughed. That's why I love you bastard. She grinned wide then went to get her tack. She threw it on him quickly and lead him to the arena. Demon grunted eagerly, raised his head to the air, curled back his lip, and sucked through his teeth. Spring was mating season. Danni quickly tugged down on the left rein, snapping the stallion back into reality. She mounted him hastily. The stallion rocketed foward in a desperate attempt to reach a mare on the other side of the fence. Danni couldn't help but laugh as she slowed him to a walk and collected his head. She loved this spitfire. She put him through his paces, reversed him and did it again, and finally got ready for the jumps. She had them set at 4' today, and Demon flew over them beautifully. Good boy... She stroked him softly and he kicked out aggressively.
When she was finished with him, Danni hosed the stallion, dodging his bites, and put him back in his stall. She admired his color in the light from the small window in the corner. He was the only "striped" thoroughbred ever registered. She wanted to breed him this season. Danni then moved to Scar. The stallion paced to the stall door as he saw her coming. He let out an inviting nicker. Him and Demon were the complete opposite. Danni stroked his forehead softly and the stallion nuzzled her arm. She tacked him as quick as possible, poking him on the large random spot on his rump, and lead him out. Danni had a thing for odd-colored thoroughbreds. A crowd was spawning just outside the cattle pen, children and parents that were probably here for lessons or to look at future prospects for the new racing year. Hello. Danni spook gently to a few of the children. They raced around Scar and rubbed him all over. The stallion nudged them graciously. I'm gonna take him in this cattle pen here kids. Watch him. He's for sale ya know. She sat deep in the saddle then, after having someone open the gate, spotted her own calf in the herd.
Now for the fun...well...half of it. She kissed to Scar and he picked up a canter, pushing the cattle into the corner. Danni yealed him to the right, splittling the herd in half, went straight foward, and withen minutes had her own calf singled out. Of course, she had purchased this fireball, the craziest calf she could find. She had named him Craze. She owned about 3 other, lower scale calves but Scar was now at Craze's level. Someone opened up the pasture gate and the crowd parted as Craze bolted out, Scar on his tail. The team pushed him into the arena where the work really began. The crowd followed. Ha. Ha. Danni called out to get the stallion out of his sleepy stage and into his working one. The calf grunted and bolted toward the pair, they slif left, circled back and chased after him, pushing him back into the corner. Craze went right, they went right. He went left, they went left. Finally, the two animals raced up the pen wall and then slowed to a steady walk. Danni looking over her shoulder and Scar with his neck bent enough so he had clear view of the steer calf. I'm going to try something new now. Im gonna try to rope Craze. Scar has never done roping before but has had some reining training. Danni announced to the crowd.
With help of a few volunteers, she loaded craze into a pen at the end of the arena. The bell rung and Scar stayed focused as the bull dashed foward. Danni kissed to him and pushed with her heels. She gave him one boot and they were on the steers tail. She held the rope above her head, yielding hard to keep the stallion from turning in to cut. Finally, she trough as the lasso fell a bit short. She gathered it up once more as they came to the end of the arena. The team guided the steer to the right, and back down the stretch. This time the rope fell perfect around his neck. The crowd cheered and the rope broke loose. Good boy, Scar. She patted him softly and the children continued to cheer. After a couple spins, Danni tipped her hat and exit the arena, put craze away, and went back the the barn. You have some true potential. She smiled at him.
After untacking him she headed back down to the crowd with a handful of flyers. On it was her name and number, the information for Scar, and her other mare for sale, Shania. On the bottom was her training information, since she was looking for more horses. One lady with short blonde hair approached her, read the flyer quickly and looked up at her. Who's this other mare ? She asked. Danni explained she'd be on "show" later in the afternoon. Thank god it was Spring again. She made her way back to the barn and sat on the bench, hoping someone would be interested in the stallion.
