Head up,nostrils flaring as he took in the activities on the track. He jigged sideways and Sky corrected him softly.
It was early in the morning and everything was black, except the track which was lit with lots of light.
The morning was seeming to fly by to Sky,she had hurried through chores and decided to start with Quest's excersize this morning instead of last as she usually rode client's and the barn's horses first.
Sky halted the stallion who didn't stand still, she checked her girth before gathering her reins tight and swinging up. Years and years of practice only made this movement so easy for Sky even when the horse scouted beneath her.
She collected her stirrups and shorted her reins asking him to walk out onto the track. The chestnut shied at anything he could think of and once on the track stretched his nose forward and down to take the reins from her but Sky was ready and squeezed each rein, alternating to keep his attention and bring his head up.
Sky clucked him into a trot and the stallion obeyed. His trot was brisk as his long legs carried them along the outside of the track for a whole curcuit and a half before Sky kissed him into a canter. Quest shook his head as he carried them smoothly along the well manicured track. He gave a crow-hop and Sky remined him not to do that with a quick tap of the whip to the horse's muscular shoulder.
"I don't think so!" She laughed as he tried to do the samething again.
Soon Quest was warmed up and Sky asked him to go faster, moving him to the inside of the rail. No one was out on the track yet so she didn't have to worry about passing. She lowered herself over his body as the horse's gait became fast and strong. Her hand's held the reins tight, kneading his neck with her fists as they flew along the track.
Sky was only going to breeze him to the 6 furlongs today and she could see the marker coming up. She kneaded her hands faster and tapped his shoulder quick with the whip. She wanted to him to push the end. He did, extending his neck and his strong legs moving faster.
As soon as they past the indicating marker,Sky stood up in her stirrups and slowed the Throughbred down to a canter with some refusion of Quest. He wanted to go more and Sky smiled at his energy. He was begining to prove himself on the track and she coudln't wait till he was ready to be raced!
Just the thought sent butterflies in her stomach but they soon 'flew' away when Quest gave a buck making her loose her balance momentarily. She regained it,corrected the horse, and brought him down to a trot to cool him out.
