The sun was starting to rise as Sky finally made her
way back to the stables.
She smiled in greeting to some of the grooms as she stepped
into the cool barn. When she reached the tackroom she glanced at
her watch. It was nine. She had gotten here early today, enjoying the
fact of not having so many people excersizing horses as most of the
other jockey's and excersize riders didn't arrive till five thirty, six o'clock.
Besides riding all but two horses so far,Sky had even managed to finish
chores and feeding. The last couple of horses would be rather easy considering that the one was Quest and the other was an experienced three year old who didn't have near as many quirks as the ones she chose to ride when she was still fresh in the mornings.
Sky slipped into the tackroom retrieving her excersize saddle, bridle, rundowns, and hard hat before squeezing by one of the hands who was entering the tackroom.
Everyone that worked here was usually friendly but a person could always have a run in with the odd worker that had been rubbed the wrong way and Sky avoided the two hands that stood in the aisle way arguing about something in a different language. She shook her head disgustedly before laughing slightly at the quirl.
The sleek black Thoroughbred was stalled a few stalls down from the tackroom and Sky quickened her pace to reach it. She unlatched the door and squeezed in,leaving her tack over the other half of the door. She reached out and grabbed the stallion's halter, clamping the lead shank onto it.She pulled the
brush from her back pocket and began quickly running it along the Thoroughbred's sleek coat, starting at his neck with short flicks that rid his coat of dirt and left it shiny. She looked around breifly to see who was taking which horse out before she turned her total focus to the impatient black.
Finishing,Sky grabbed the pad and saddle and put it on the stallion's back. The girth wasn't done up without a protesting hammer of hoof against the wall.Sky correct the stallion with a stern 'NO' before she continued to tack him up. To her suprise he took the bit willingly but his patients were wearing thin with Sky as she quickly wrapped his delicate legs and put blinkers on him. He shook his head and pulled hard against her. This didn't help much when he tried to ram through the stall door Sky was opening.
A person learn't to keep their patients and cool while working with these animals. They could be so unpredictable and one tracked mind but the thrill of going full fetch around a track still gave Sky butterflies.
"Heads up!"Sky yelled to the two men that still stood in the middle of the barn arguing as she fought with the Thoroughbred. The two men scurried out of the way like two little mice being chased by the barn cats. She smiled but it soon faded as the stallion tried to ram forward she corrected him quickly and he walked normal untill he spotted the track. He jigged on spot, swinging his hindquarters around to bump her and randomly crowhopping. His antics where cute and Sky had noticed that Quest was starting to inherite these quircks as well.
Sky led the stallion in a small circle, excepting a quick leg up from one of the grooms. She settled in the saddle, collecting her stirrups and posting in rythm with the smooth horse. They entered the track and settled into a good working trot to start warming up. Sky looked around to see if she knew anyone out yet but her focus was brought abruptly back when the black Thoroughbred decided to give a little buck. After regaining her balance she gave the horse a quick check and asked him to canter, laughing as they moved along the track.
